Preserve The Past For A Beautiful Future

:phunk recently contributed an artwork to the FUTURE MEMORY project. Future Memory is a platform for designers and architects from the UK and Singapore to showcase and exchange ideas around a theme of relevance and interest to both countries. It began in July with a Forum at the National Museum of Singapore which brought together British and Singaporean architects and artists for a shared discussion on the role memory has played in both their own practice and wider urban environment. The Future Memory Pavilion captures and elaborates on the themes in built form and encourages a continuing dialogue about memory and ideas about change.

LOPPA Pendant Lamp (Special Edition / Light My Fire) by :phunk

Loppa is a pendant lamp inspired by envelopes. The lampshade surrounds the light much like an envelope enclosing a letter. The paper structure supports the form and diffuses the light, giving a warm glow to the atmosphere.
It was featured in Wallpaper Design Directory 2009.

Special Edition/ Light My Fire
Launched specially for the inaugural Saturday In Design Singapore 2011, Foundry decided to approach renowned design collective :phunk to create a special edition of Loppa.

:phunk's New World series of art is an imaginary carnival fantasy land which tells the tale of an apocalyptic society where good and evil co-exist. The Loppa lamp takes on New World with lyrics from "Light My Fire" by the Doors, subtly embossed on the lamp. It is a whimsical re-interpretation of :phunk's universe.

Are You Experience?

TRANSMISSION: EXPERIENCE
Transmission: Project 2010

TRANSMISSION: EXPERIENCE creates an outlet for telling and circulating stories and interpretations materialising through art and design. Whether involving mental, physical or virtual, a dredged- up or residual memory of an experience will continue to reside in one’s mind. Through examining the extraction, conservation and continuation of personal stories and memories to be preserved for posterity, memories are temporarily made tangible in this exhibition. Drawing upon the common theme that characterise our existence and shape lives, it aptly sets the stage for what brings together diversity- experiences.

Named after TRANSMISSION: LAB, an atelier studio run by Singapore art and design collective :phunk at LASALLE, TRANSMISSION: EXPERIENCE is an exhibition emerging from a series of studio projects between :phunk and the apprentices. As part of the ongoing series in TRANSMISSION: PROJECT, the exhibition this year is a platform to develop new concepts and collaborative projects in graphic design, fashion, product design, photography, illustration, motion graphics, film, interactive art, architecture and fine art. The exhibition presents the new works of fourteen promising young apprentices from TRANSMISSION: LAB. The apprentices invited twenty-four guest artists from Japan, Italy and US to join them in the exhibition.

Welcome To Electricity...

DIESEL DENIM GALLERY AOYAMA is presenting the first solo exhibition of :phunk in Japan, “WELCOME TO ELECTRICITY”. :phunk has stepped out of Singapore which is becoming Asian art and design hub and taken the world by storm. “ELECTRICITY”, one of the best works of :phunk continuously-created in various methods since its first release in 2006, is an imaginary megalopolis projecting their endless admiration to journey. In “ELECTRICITY”, details of cities all over the world they visited in their real life will exist together, embracing any kinds of diversities. What is welcomed in “ELECTRICITY” is a spirit of globalization. In this city, there is no such distinction as the East and the West. “Love” is the common language, and young and fresh creativity is vitality of its own. Everyone will be able to take part in “Electricity”. During the exhibition, DIESEL DENIM GALLERY AOYAMA itself will become the ideal urban space of :phunk.

Animamix Biennial 2009-2010

:phunk will be participating in the Animamix Biennial 2009-2010. :phunk's artworks will be exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Shanghai.

The Animamix artists of the 21st century are not just the people who are engaged in creating animation and comics products; rather, Animamix artists are found in all the fields of the creative industry. Unlike the pop artists of the previous century who simply appropriated visual symbols from comics and animation, 21st century Animamix artists are a new generation of Neo-Aesthetics who are already completely submersed in the aesthetics of Animamix. The multifarious styles of Animamix art actually are the very archetype of artistic creation. In other words, Animamix art has become the most important source of inspiration for the global art scene in the 21st century.

SELF-PORTRAITS

:phunk will be exhibiting in Self-Portraits. The idea of this exhibition is to approach the historical theme of self-portraits and to bring it into a contemporary art context. A self-portrait is a representation of an artist, drawn, painted, photographed, or sculpted by the artist. Although self-portraits have been made by artists since the earliest times, it is not until the Early Renaissance in the mid 1400s that artists can be frequently identified depicting themselves as either the main subject, or as important characters in their work. With better and cheaper mirrors, and the advent of the panel portrait, many painters, sculptors and printmakers tried some form of self-portraiture... In this respect it will be an interesting and new experience to show the vision of the "self-portrait" by contemporary urban artists from all over the world. For more info please visit Circleculture Gallery.

Opening reception: friday june 5th, 7-10 pm

New Wave

Curatorial Statement - Joyce Toh

Thus we cover the universe with drawings we have lived.

When we think of school – of heady youthful days, of the time of growing up – how deep do our memories go? Stepping inside a classroom bursting with images of skateboards, comics, soccer, rock ‘n’ roll magazines, graffiti declaring teenage love, it appears we are taking a nostalgic and rosy trip down memory lane. Yet this room is not quite like most others: entering it is a slide down Alice’s rabbit hole. A little smaller than the usual classroom – 50% smaller to be precise – this room-within-a-room is also a site that embodies the collective consciousness of the creative outfit known as :phunk studio. With its scaled-down door, desks and chairs, the miniature classroom forces the (adult) viewer to squeeze smaller and smaller, in making that journey back in time. On the outside, chalk scribbles, drawings and silkscreen printed white text cover an exterior which is all ‘blackboard’. On the most immediate level, the work is a tongue-in-cheek interpretation of shared experiences when the :phunk members were half their current age. It is personal, even autobiographical. Yet in line with :phunk’s recent works which have explored the theme of universality, this interpretation is expanded through the participation of other teenagers who have been invited to participate by writing or doodling their own thoughts about teenage life as they live it here and now.The allure of youth has been with humankind through history and its civilizations. However the preoccupation with teenage culture is a more recent urban phenomenon: witness the rise of the ‘kidult’ over the last decade or so. Nonetheless the period of adolescence is a strange one: it is a time when childhood has started to shed its innocence, yet it has not acquired the armor of adulthood. What then is the space that can embody this perplexing age and time? Standing in this room, there is a certain unease, though not one that is easily apparent. In essence, the space does not offer the reassurance of a miniature for it is not as small as what a true miniature should be, neither is it big enough to offer the comfort of a normal size room -– its neither/nor (or is it either/or?) nature perfectly echoing the in-between state of teenage years. The work is a movement back across the years paralleled by a shift down in size -– a simultaneous, double-barreled space-time action. This space-time feat however, is accompanied by a third transformation. With its pointed roof, this classroom bears the features of the classic house. Befitting perhaps, for the house is also, in Bachelard’s words, “[O]ur corner of the world, [...] our first universe.” Even before the school and the classroom, the house is, for children, the very first space they encounter and thus remember. A place of shelter and protection, the house is the first building where refuge is sought and memories made. As home, it is also the first space where dreams are projected onto and ideas about the world are gradually explored. Armed with the pencil, children embark on these explorations foremost through drawing and even the earliest scribbles and doodles often dwell on images of the house. As a projection into the future and/or an expression of events into the past, drawing and illustration thus adorn the surfaces of a work that is both house and classroom: two sites collapsed into one. However like young Alice’s adventure, few things can be taken for granted once the imagination is set loose and starts to re-think the universe. :phunk’s work is situated within a gallery and takes some of its physical attributes, namely its size, in relation to the larger room. Initial appearances suggest this to be a mise-en-abyme, a room-within-a-room, but even so, Alice learnt a better than to trust looks. For we are not presented the former, or even room-within-a-house, rather it is a house-within-a-room. The formal architectural relationship is upturned, suggesting some of the turbulence of teenage years.

Central to this work is the notion of memory: the individual, the collective, the shared and the personal, how real memories seem, how unreliable they often turn out to be. In its initial unmarked state, the work’s exterior is a tabula rasa – a blank surface awaiting the imprinting of memories and experiences of younger days even as it anticipates the grown-up future. Yet this curious space – with its blackboard exterior and attendant fake shadow covered with half-erased chalk scribbles words – also call to mind the Freudian wunderblock imagined as a house. It is a three-dimensional embodiment of that mysterious and miraculous device that records every experience as mark and memory, yet appears to offer a clean slate each time it is wiped over. Though some drawings and words are erased, they leave a mark and a fine film of white dust – these transitory memories overlap and contrast with the more permanent recollections. How deep can memories go? :phunk might suggest, as deep as the abyss of a pencil case.

It is an evolving visual system that seamlessly references and reinterprets their diverse influences such as traditional Chinese philosophy, craft and folklore, Hong Kong pulp fiction, Japanese manga and otaku subculture, Western popular culture, art and design movements into the creation of a universe populated by it's own world of creatures, objects, people, ideologies, buildings, landscapes, cities, and natural forces.

LIVE IN DUBLIN...

Electricity is an imaginary city which celebrates the spirit of globalization - the meeting of different minds and cultures. Phunk Studio's wanderlust played a huge influence on the creation of this giant canvas mural. Drawing inspirations from their travel log in cities like New York, Berlin, London, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai and many others, Electricity is a vision of a global city, where diversity is a celebration and there is no East or West. With Aidan Kelly lending a slant in photography, the skies of Electricity drops into a surreal wonderland of floating horses, spiders and butterflies.

:phunk joins the Hybreed project, Italy.

Hybreed is a project starting now, focused on the new professional figure that operates in the border zone between art and design, between experimentation and design work, between research and commercial needs; the advent of new instruments such as the computer and the new important potential to communicate through the web; the possibility to create long-distance cooperation in previously unthought of time, and the consequential birth of ?design communities?: these are the elements that characterize a phenomenon born in these last years, which is still in a phase of evolution.Hybreed originates in Italy and becomes a project that develops through a website, a book, an event: it expresses our theory and the concepts that we have been formulating during the course of the analysis of this phenomenon; its main intent is to identify and describe its characteristics, its dynamics and principal protagonists.

CHAOS IN DOWN UNDER

After 2 successful exhibitions in New York & Singapore, Control Chaos is going down under - Sydney, Australia. The title of the exhibition is called Control Chaos III. It is a place influenced by the pugilistic world of 80's Hong Kong TV serial. Using :phunk's own visual vocabulary, the collective renders a dysfunctional/apocalyptic take on the classic tales of good versus evil set in the backdrop of heaven, earth and hell. :phunk has injected their distinctive style of illustration to create a mural. The mural is made up of 12 pieces of custom-designed canvases made from corrugated boxes. The limited edition artworks are individually silkscreened.

Date: 30th September 2010

This collaboration blurs the gaps between worlds, bringing the past closer to the present and art and design into a tense alignment.

The black and white presentation is a close-up study of :phunk's artworks from the 'Universe' and 'New World' series. :phunk's has developed an original vector illustration technique that is inspired by the halftone screen and shading techniques of comic books and mangas. It is an evolving visual system that seamlessly references and reinterprets their diverse influences such as traditional Chinese philosophy, craft and folklore, Hong Kong pulp fiction, Japanese manga and otaku subculture, Western popular culture, art and design movements into the creation of a universe populated by its own world of creatures, objects, people, ideologies, buildings, landscapes, cities, and natural forces.

Opening reception: friday june 5th, 7-10 pm

Phunk Studio's NEW WORLD

:phunk's new universal theme park
